Fortune Favours the Brave

The Community Players of New Hamburg are proud to present the Waterloo Region premiere of Elton John and Tim Rice’s Aida. Contemporary, edgy, romantic, tragic and inspirational are only a few of the words that can describe this epic musical.

Building on a rich history of memorable theatre---Children of Eden, Titanic, Carousel, The Wizard of Oz and most recently Cats, TCP invites you to journey with us in the spring of 2011 to the distant lands of Egypt and Nubia for what promises to be another amazing theatrical journey: community theatre at its very best!

Director’s Note

Knowing the dedication and talent that makes TCP what it is, I am excited about creating a spectacular rendition of this amazing musical, which opened on Broadway only 11 years ago. The music is tremendously exciting, and I am looking forward to making use of the great choral sound that TCP has become known for. Already my mind is spinning as I envision colours in light, fabric and sound. Pyramids and sails surround beautiful voices as they tell the tragic love story, set in ancient times, brought boldly and beautifully into the 21st century.

There are only three female and three male solo roles in AIDA. However, there are many characters who have significant speaking roles and we are creating several small group numbers. The ensemble will be on stage for most of the story. This is a musical for people who truly love the 'ensemble' aspects of a show __ a show that continues to make TCP renowned for it's sincere 'community ' focus.

Artistically, musically  and visually, TCP has set a standard that our team plans to uphold. I invite everyone to come and join us.

GENERAL AUDITION INFORMATION

  • Please arrive at least 15 minutes prior to your audition time so that you can fill out your audition information form, familiarize yourself with the 2011 TCP show involvement guidelines, and to take a few minutes to prepare for your audition.
  • Please bring appropriate clothing for the movement/dance portion of the audition. Wear comfortable loose fitting clothing or dancewear with appropriate shoes. PLEASE NO JEANS
  • You MAY NOT audition to prerecorded music.
  • An accompanist will be provided, or if you wish you can provide your own.
  • Plan to spend 60 minutes with us to complete your total audition (individual and movements component)

What to Prepare for your Audition
ADULTS (ages 13+)

VOCALS

  • If you are auditioning for a specific character, please come prepared with 1-2 songs from AIDA. At least one of your song choices should be of that character’s songs. (You are NOT required to provide AIDA music for the accompanist.) The songs you select to sing may be contrasting if you wish to showcase your vocal range.
  • If you are not auditioning for a specific character, please come prepared with any song of your choice that showcases your voice. (You ARE required to provide music for the accompanist.)
  • Because you will have less than 2 minutes to sing your song(s), please come prepared with only the part of the song you want the audition panel to hear. Time may not permit you to sing the entire song.
  • The panel may ask you to sing additional material from the show at your audition.

DRAMATIC READING
Each adult auditioning is asked to prepare the following as a dramatic reading.

Every story, new or ancient, bagatelle, or work of art, is a tale of human failing.
All are tales of love at heart.
This is the story of a love that flourished in a time of hate and of lovers no tyranny could separate.
This is the story of love, set on the Nile's shore and of destiny, ignited by an act of war.

CREATIVE MOVEMENT / DANCE

  • Everyone auditioning will take part in a general group creative movement/dance audition. When you book your audition, you will be told when your group audition will be. It will be either before or after your individual audition.
  • The movement audition will consist of abstract and creative movement with some choreographed elements. Don’t be concerned that you are not a trained dancer, just come with an open mind and a willingness to learn and have fun!

Role of Children in Aida
Roughly 5 – 10 children will be cast in this production. There are no defined roles for children, however, the directors plan to incorporate children into the production through ensemble opportunities. It is recommended that ALL children who audition have strong vocal and movement abilities. All children auditioning and ultimately cast in the show must be independently responsible.

CHILDREN (ages 6-12)

VOCALS
Children auditioning DO NOT have to come with a song prepared, the musical director will teach all children a song at the audition.
DRAMATIC READING
Children are not required to prepare a dramatic reading.
DANCE / MOVEMENT
Everyone child auditioning will take part in a group movement/dance audition.

About The Community Players

In the 27 years that The Community Players of New Hamburg have been presenting musical productions, the group has earned a widespread reputation for creating visually stunning, professional-calibre theatre. The Community Players are a charitable and volunteer organization with the mandate of giving back a portion of the proceeds of each show to the community.

Since 1984, TCP has proudly given more than $50,000 back to the community. Whether in support of the local food bank or counseling centre, backing community projects such as the Wilmot Recreation Complex or simply helping out other community groups like ourselves, TCP keeps the community at the forefront of all our activities.

Every year these musicals are made possible by the dedication and excitement of hundreds of volunteers— people just like you. It takes an entire team to create the magic of a TCP production. And we’d like you to join that team. If you can sing, sew, paint, dance, build or act, and whether this is your first show or your 27th, we’d love to have you join the TCP family.
